Bauhaus to issue ‘The Bela Session’ EP to celebrate 40th anniversary

‘The Bela Session’ EP by Bauhaus will this autumn celebrate the 40th anniversary of their formation, with both a vinyl and digital release. ‘The Bela Session’ captures the first time the Northampton band recorded together, just six weeks after forming as a band, on January 26th, 1979. This is the first release of that complete recording session featuring all five tracks, three of which are previously unreleased. This also marks the first official reissue of the single ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’ on vinyl for over thirty years. The audio has been newly mastered from the original analogue tape by Mandy Parnell at Black Saloon Studios. The white vinyl version is limited to 1000 copies, plus there is a black vinyl version too.

Bauhaus composed of Peter Murphy (vocals, occasional instruments), Daniel Ash (guitar), Kevin Haskins (drums), and David J (bass). Venerated and highly influential, the band emerged from the post-punk alternative music scene of the early ’80s with a string of innovative albums and a powerfully dramatic live presentation. ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’ is widely considered the original gothic rock record, and a cornerstone of the specific genre. Originally released in 1979 on Small Wonder Records, it failed to make the pop charts but remained a staple of the UK independent singles chart for many years.

To further celebrate the 40th year mark Beggars Banquet /4AD will be reissuing records from the band’s catalog on limited edition color vinyl, details of which are to be announced. Vinyl Me Please will also offer an exclusive edition of ‘The Bela Session’ on red vinyl in their member store.

1. “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” – 9:36
2. “Some Faces” – 2:29 – previously unreleased
3. “Bite My Hip”– 2:57 – previously unreleased yet later reworked, re-recorded, and released as “Lagartija Nick” in 1983
4. “Harry” – 2:56 – later released as a B-side in 1982
5. “Boys (Original)” – 3:03 – previously unreleased, later re-recorded and released as the B-side of “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”

Leaving Records, in partnership with Stones Throw Records, will release The Bela Session on November 23rd. Pre-order ‘The Bela Session’ via Bandcamp or the Stones Throw website [US site].
