For the second year running, we asked you to vote in the Best NN Single category of the New Boots annual Year In Review.

We’ll be publishing the latter shortly, but this year we’ve decided to reveal the winner of our public vote separately – and from the photo, you already know who it is.

More than 2,000 people voted for their favourite track from a Northants artist this year and Wasting Time by Billy Lockett took the top spot.

Early on in the voting, the lead changed hands several times. However, in the end Lockett opened up what was an ‘insurmountable’ lead.

The top five places went to:

1 – Wasting Time, Billy Lockett
2 – Dirty Rider, The Big Dirty
3 – You Next, FFSYTHO
4 – Echoes, Lucien Moon
5 – Today, The Moons

We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who voted. We picked 25 tracks this year for our end of year poll and we could have chosen even more.

King Purple were presented with their winning trophy for their 2019 single Warning Signs when they played at The Black Prince.

However, today, we met up with Billy Lockett in Abington Park to hand over his accolade.

Talking about taking the top spot, Lockett said: “It’s amazing. It’s nice to win and it’s great that it’s with a local website like New Boots in a town where I’ve lived all my life.

“New Boots has become one of the biggest and best-known websites in the town covering new music. Anyone and everyone promoting new music is really important.

“I’m really proud of this. I really want to do the best I can at what I’m doing and to get the recognition from fans is fantastic.

Billy Lockett receiving the New Boots Best Single award in Abington Park, Northampton, December 5, 2020.

“Wasting Time is about heartbreak, it’s as obvious as it gets when it comes to a concept, but I meant every word and it’s real.

“There’s been great singles from this county this year. I love what Tragic, Sarpa Salpa and Maddox Jones have all put out among others.

“There’s a great local scene here and it’s great to be part of it again.

“When I went to London, I felt a bit detached from it and I think it’s important to be a part of something and it’s nice that Northampton has that scene.

“I want to thank all my fans for voting and I really didn’t expect this, it’s really nice.”

Next year, Lockett will release further singles and the EP Reflections.

He is playing a sold-out gig at the 100 Club in London this month and planning to play across the globe next year.
