New Boots has teamed up with promoters SJM to give away a pair of tickets to see Echo & The Bunnymen at Royal & Derngate this month.

The band headline the Northampton venue on Saturday, October 20, only weeks after the release of their latest album The Stars, The Oceans & The Moon.

Their 13th album sees the band revisit their back catalogue to reinterpret some of their most beloved songs with ‘strings and things’. It also features the new tracks How Far and The Somnambulist.

Echo & The Bunnymen formed in Liverpool in 1978 and are based around the duo of singer Ian McCulloch and guitarist Will Sergeant.

Of the new versions McCulloch said, “I’m not doing this for anyone else. I’m doing it as it’s important to me to make the songs better. I have to do it”.

To enter the competition, email the answer to the following question to:
competitions@newboots.uk
What is the name of Echo & The Bunnymen’s 1980 debut album?

The subject field of the email must be ‘Bunnymen Competition’
You must include your full name and daytime contact phone number.
Entries must be received by 11.59pm on Monday, October 15.

Tickets for the gig are still available from the venue and cost from £32.50 before fees.
For more information, visit www.royalandderngate.co.uk and www.bunnymen.com

Here at New Boots, our priority is always going to be championing the Northamptonshire music scene, the acts and venues based in the county, and those heading here to play.

However, there’s fantastic venues and promoters ‘across the border’ who are doing equally great things.

With that in mind, today marks the first of what is (hopefully) going to be a quick weekly rundown of what some of the gigs venues nearby have coming up in the coming seven days which may be worthy of your attention.

DUB PISTOLS
Saturday, October 6th
Esquires, Bedford
After a cracking headline set at Bedford’s River Festival this year, The Pad Presents are bringing Dub Pistols back to the region. Mixing equal parts rock, big beat, dub and electronica, the band released their latest album Crazy Diamonds in 2017. Doors open at 8pm, tickets cost £15 in advance before fees.

ENSLAVED
Saturday, October 6th
The Craufurd Arms, Milton Keynes
Enslaved are out on a short UK tour and headline the Craufurd Arms on Saturday. The Extreme metal five piece from Norway blend their sound with progressive, melodic rock and in 2017 picked up the Norwegian Album of The Year Grammy award for their LP E. Support is by Svalbard and KRAKOW. Doors open at 7.30pm, tickets cost £16 in advance before fees.

DR FEELGOOD
Saturday, October 6th
The Assembly, Leamington Spa
‘Pub rockers’ Dr Feelgood may not have released an album for some time, but they’re still live favourites on the gig circuit. Ahead of joining The Stranglers on tour next year, they’re playing across the UK – including a gig in Northampton in November. Before then, you can catch them this weekend in Leamington. Doors open at 7pm, tickets cost £17.68.

THE MOMS
Sunday, October 7th
The Craufurd Arms, Milton Keynes
New Jersey DIY power rock trio The Moms are in the UK touring in support of last year’s LP Doing Asbestos We Can. Support at the Craufurd Arms is by The Run Up, The Dead Melody and Safest Spaces. Doors open at 7.30pm, tickets cost £6 before fees.

BARB JUNGR & JOHN McDANIEL
Sunday, October 7th
The Stables, Wavendon
Singer songwriter Barb Junger is teaming up with John McDaniel at The Stables for a night which will be exploring the music of Sting. Doors open at 8.45pm, tickets cost £20 in advance before fees.

OK, this is a long post full of photos,  but we wanted to include as many as possible in our Hootenanny round up.

Last weekend, the Rock Up, YUK and Enabler Promotions guys pulled off quite frankly a great day of live music at Rockingham Speedway in Corby.

The line up featured rock, indie and hip-hop spread across three stages mixing some of the best local and national aacts.

There were some fantastic performances and we tried to capture as much as we could. Hopefully, what follows is a bit of (almost) everything.

Matt Hollywood & The Bad Feelings played The Lab in Northampton last Sunday, supported by King Purple. Hollywood is a former member of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, the modern psych legends who played Northampton back in 2008. The well-received band played a blissed-out set, something akin to the Sterling Morrison-era Velvet Underground.

Here are some photos of the evening, courtesy of David Jackson.

Enter Shikari announce Roadmender return as part of 28-date UK tour

Enter Shikari are heading back to the Roadmender in January as part of a huge 28 UK tour.

Tickets for the show on Monday, January 28, go on sale this Friday at 9am and cost £25.

Frontman Rou Reynolds said: “Our most recent UK tours have been of the ‘eight or nine shows in arenas / big sheds’ variety, so we consciously wanted to switch it up a bit going into 2019.

“Enter Shikari have always kept dipping back into more intimate venues over the years, no matter how big our headline shows have become.

“That’s where we cut our teeth. The heat-sweat-and-visceral-human-connection of smaller gigs is every bit the equal of the impressive-scale-and-expensive-production of arena shows.

“We’ve never seen the latter as an evolution away from the former. They exist on opposite sides of the same coin for us.

“It’s also no secret that austerity and the looming potential disaster of Brexit have seen people having to be a lot more careful with how they spend their money.

“With things being what they are right now, it doesn’t seem fair for only those who can afford the travel to a major city for a night out (plus the inevitable other costs that go along with it) to be able to see a show.

“Playing 28 dates across the UK is our way of taking what we do back to as many people as possible, in the most intimate and direct way.”

Enter Shikari are currently in the midst of festival season which has seen them play to huge crowds at Germany’s Rock Am Ring / Rock Im Park and Vainstream festivals, Austria’s Novarock and Czech Republic’s Rock For People.

Tickets will be available from www.entershikari.com/shows
